Today, we travelled to Roxwell hoping to gain our first win of the season as both teams were near the bottom of the table. The weather was perfect cricket conditions as the sun shined and minimal wind to largely affect the game.
Writtle won the toss and opted to bat as they currently only had 9 men and hoped for others to turn up. Skipper Davis was more than happy with this decision due to a strong bowling attack. The Kennedy brothers opened the bowling. Danny was getting a nice bit of out swing and pace making it increasingly hard for the bat. Same with Ryan, however a few too many dodgey balls for his liking. They both took 1 wicket, which was undeserved. On another day, possibly less dropped catches would’ve made their figures better. As the overs ticked people looked tired in the field. Danny Kennedy was compared to Mr Gooch due to his pace.
A big mention to J.Taylor for Writtle who managed to score an impressive 78. He was stopped in his tracks as he got a huge inside edge off of the skippers bowling onto his own stumps. This rejuvenated the energy in the field with some help of J.Hewer also taking a wicket.
Skipper and J.Hewer then steam rolled the rest of the opposition with Davis taking 3 and Hewer with 2 plus a run out. H.Banyard took 2 good catches to help end their batting earlier then they hoped. Writtle scored 146 as they were bowled out in the 29th over. We understood that this was a good score however, there was a large amount of faith due to our batting lineup looking strong.
H.Banyard(15) looked very comfortable in the crease alongside D.Kennedy(9). As they both gathered confidence and settled in they were out by a bowler who some would say too good for div 9 cricket. J.Hewer(14) came in at 3 with R.Kennedy(13) at 4. A partnership that stuck around for slightly less than any hoped for. Just like the other 2 Kennedy was out miles before he hoped as he was bowled by Writtles opening “div 9” bowler.
The skipper was now in the crease with bunner as he saw their opening bowlers out at ease. The feast of our order wasn’t looking the most priming therefore we knew we were relied on for runs. Bunner got caught and C.Dockney got a 3 ball duck. Debutant M.Clark was strictly instructed “to not get out!” Due to the fact we wer currently 85-5 from 19 overs.
With someone sensible batting the runs just kept coming with Totham eventually chasing the score in the 29th over with skipper davis getting 38 not out and M.Clark with 23.
