Fantasy Cricket: The Willow Wallopers 2026 Fantasy Manifesto

Welcome to the 2026 Fantasy Season! The changing rooms have a fresh coat of paint (try not to lean on the walls just yet—looking at you, Pook), the tea urn is whistling, and the Willow Wallopers have officially submitted their paperwork. Before we unveil the XI that will lead us to glory, let’s take a comprehensive look at the landscape of this year's competition.

--- THE SCOUT’S NOTEBOOK: ANALYZING THE FIELD ---

Before a single ball is bowled, every manager has to decide where to invest their 55m budget. It’s a game of trade-offs. Do you buy the flashy opening batter who might get a duck, or the reliable medium-pacer who lives in the "corridor of uncertainty"?

BATTING HEAVYWEIGHTS:

When it comes to pure runs, Paul Marks (6m) is the gold standard. He’s the most expensive batter for a reason—consistency. If the sun is out and the pitch is flat, Paul is a walking 50-bonus. However, if you’re looking for "boom or bust" potential, Jamie Potter (5.5m) and Jono Ford (5m) are the ones to watch. They play the game with a "see ball, hit ball" philosophy that either results in a rapid century or a very early walk back to the pavilion.

The real trick this year is finding the mid-range anchors. Players like our very own Kevin Mays (4m) or Jacob Slater (4m) are essential. They accumulate points through sheer stubbornness. In a league won by margins, these "safe" runs are the bedrock of a championship campaign.

BOWLING STRIKE FORCE:

Wickets are the most valuable currency in this game. At 25 points per scalp, a bowler taking a three-fer is often more valuable than a batter scoring a fifty. This makes Jim Gregory (7m) and Ryan Kennedy (6.5m) the most feared names on the price list. However, savvy managers are also looking at the "Economy Kings." James Wheeler (5.5m) and Jonathan Hewer (5.5m) are masters of the dot ball. In this format, maidens and low economy rates provide a steady drip-feed of points.

ALL-ROUNDER ELITE:

This is the most competitive category in 2026. These are the players who effectively give you two players in one. Joe Davis (12m) is, statistically, in a league of his own, but the rivalry between him and James Pook (10m) is the talk of the clubhouse. While James might argue he’s the more "refined" cricketer, Joe’s point-scoring ability is undeniable. The dilemma for every manager is whether to stack three elite All-Rounders or use that budget to bolster the bowling attack.

--- THE WILLOW WALLOPERS: STARTING XI ---

Selecting a team on a 55m budget is like trying to fit a family of five into a two-seater car—something has to give. Here is our finalized squad:

KEEPER: JOE GREGORY (5.0m)

Our man with the gloves. With 6 stumpings last year, his hands are faster than a teenager trying to hide a phone. In a league where stumpings are worth 30 points, Joe is a statistical goldmine waiting to happen.

ALL-ROUNDER (CAPTAIN): JOE DAVIS (12.0m)

The Captain. The Myth. The Ego. Joe is our most expensive asset. His 1,710 points last year were the stuff of fantasy legend. We just hope he’s managed to find a new helmet manufacturer over the winter willing to do a custom oversize for that famously large head of his. We’ve handed him the captaincy immediately; frankly, we just couldn't afford the three-hour lecture on the "perfect elbow position" of his cover drive if we didn't.

ALL-ROUNDER: MAX CLARKE (7.0m)

24 wickets and nearly 400 runs last season. Max is the guy who does everyone’s homework, wins the sports day race, and then apologizes for being so good. He provides the perfect safety net for the team.

ALL-ROUNDER: GEORGE BARON (5.0m)

Our mid-range magician. He hit a century last year, proving he’s got the "big game" temperament we need. George is the kind of player who flies under the radar until he’s suddenly on 80 not out.

BATTER: KEVIN MAYS (4.0m)

Consistency is key here. As our Chairman, we expect Kevin to set a fine example on the pitch—mostly by not firing the fantasy manager if we have a bad week. He’s a solid accumulator who knows how to grind out a fifty.

BATTER: JOHN DUNDAS (3.0m)

The first of our "Value Kings." Scoring nearly 500 points for just 3m is basically a gift from the cricket gods. If John repeats his 2025 form, he’ll be the reason we can afford the superstars.

BATTER: JOSHUA CHADWICK (3.5m)

Every team needs a wildcard. Josh showed he can hit a ton, and we’re hoping he brings that "all-or-nothing" energy to the middle order this summer.

BOWLER: JIM GREGORY (7.0m)

Our strike bowler. Jim is absolutely deadly—provided the batter isn't standing on the leg side. We know he bowled roughly 150 wides last season (nearly 10 a game!), so we’ve bought him a compass and a map to help him find the stumps this year.

BOWLER: RYAN KENNEDY (6.5m)

Originally, we had George Davis in this spot to save pennies, but when we realized we had a bit of spare cash, we immediately upgraded to Ryan. He took 20 wickets last season and bagged a five-fer. Those big-haul bonuses are the fastest way to the top.

BOWLER: RALPH DUNDAS (1.0m)

The ultimate "enabler." For a 1m price tag, Ralph allows us to afford the elite talent at the top. His 15 wickets last year make him a bargain that shouldn't be legal.

BOWLER: ELIZA DUNDAS (1.0m)

Rounding out the Dundas Dynasty. Eliza gives us the flexibility to keep the budget balanced while still chipping in with crucial wickets.

--- THE SCOUT REPORT: INTERNAL POLITICS ---

We know James Pook might be writing a formal letter of protest regarding the captaincy (we see you, James!), but Joe Davis's stats are simply too big to ignore. We just hope that if he hits another century, he doesn't try to celebrate by throwing his hat in the air—we simply haven't got the budget to replace a custom-made XXXL cap every week.

We also looked at Jack "Pigeon" Ridge for a spot, but after seeing that viral video of the ball bouncing off his face, we decided he might be better suited as a Director of Cricket rather than a fantasy starter. Sorry, Jack—we just can't afford the points deduction for "catches made with the nose," regardless of how much Pigeon-like speed you show in the field.

As for the club legends—Olly Kendall, Peter Willingale, and Ollie Cheeseman—they remain firmly on our "Wildcard Watchlist." We know their availability might be limited, but the moment we see their names on a Saturday morning team sheet, we’ll be checking the "Transfer" button.

--- THE MANAGER’S GOAL: THE ROAD TO GLORY ---

Last year, the leaderboard was dominated by the Pook family, with Malcolm Pook taking the crown, followed by Mo Shorney and Joe Davis. Meanwhile, Tim Logue finished so far down the table he was practically in a different time zone.

Our goal for the Willow Wallopers is simple and two-fold:

 1. Finish above Joe Davis. Not just because we want the prize money, but because we really don't want to hear him talk about his cover drive at the bar for the next twelve months.

 2. Avoid the Wooden Spoon. We’ve spent every single pound of our 55m budget. We are officially "all-in."

There is no Plan B. We are banking on Jim Gregory keeping it straight, Joe Davis keeping his helmet on, and the Dundas family continuing their reign of budget-friendly terror.

UP THE WALLOPERS! Let’s keep the balls in the park, the wides to a minimum, and please—for the love of cricket—don't "do a Pigeon" and try to head the ball to the boundary.
