The 3s this week found themselves travelling to Dunmow to face Old Chelmsfordians 3rd XI, with rain pouring down on route to the ground play was looking unlikely. However, upon arrival the rain eased off and allowed us to get underway, with Hay valiantly winning the toss and elected to bowl first. For the first spells of bowling Captain Jimmy Hay turned to Callum Dockney and the demon we all know as Ryan Archibald. Callum bowled well giving the batsman some troubling balls, Archibald down the other end was maintaining a nice steady line down leg side keeping the batsman guessing whenever the odd ball carried down the off side, what a player.
With Totham in desperate need of wickets, Captain Jimmy threw the ball to young debutant Issey Croft, his bowling tactics were sound as he decided to bowl to the batsman while most of the team were shouting to the scorers the new bowlers name, the ball clipped the top of off stump, an absolute classic 3s wicket. At the other end came on another debutant Mr Harry Banyard, he bowled a nice steady line and managed to get a wicket in amongst his spell.
After drinks, Jimmy put on Young leg spinner Cameron Smith, the young debutant bowled some absolute corkers, however he received no reward for his magnificent performance with the ball. At the other end Jimmy made the crucial choice of bringing himself on and attacking the batting with his lethal off break, amongst his spell he managed to dismiss a few of their danger men including the oppo's captain, he finished his spell with figures of 3 – 35 off 9 overs. Callum Dockney was brought back on and managed to get him self a wicket in his second spell. All round a very impressive bowling performance with the hosts finishing on 210/6
After a quick tea break and some extensive moaning from Barry Gooch, Totham set off to chase the score with Jimmy Hay and Harry Banyard opening the batting. The pair battled hard and worked up an exquisite 88 run partnership to set off Totham on their glorious run chase, however Jimmy went for one shot too many and gets bowled through the gate ending his innings on 33, Mr Banyard carried on the fight but for only him to eventually get caught and bowled by a sharp looking young bowler, a good effort but was stopped in his tracks on 47. With the openers gone, Totham suffered a series of dismissals which led to our collapse, we finished on 111 all out. A good effort in the field but couldn’t reply with the bat. I’m sure the 3s will be looking to get a break through next week at home with vice captain George Davis making his return to the game of cricket.
