After a few weeks with no Sunday cricket due to weather and unavailability, the Sunday XI were back with a strong team to face Eight Ash Green at home. Captain Chadwick Jr won the toss and decided to bowl, despite the fine for bowling first on a Sunday this proved to be a stroke of genius by Chadwick.
J. Smoker opened up down the hill, bowling very tightly in his spell, along with D. Quatermaine who was unlucky not to get a wicket when EAG’s opener edged the ball to first slip (Cheeseman) who crumbled under the pressure and couldn’t catch the slow, looping ball. Despite the drop, Cheeseman came on down the hill for the first time in his career, bowling very well for his spell, getting a well-deserved wicket. G. Davis came on up the hill, bowling some very good balls, but struggled to find a rhythm. An inspired change by Captain Chadwick meant H. Cooper came on to bowl what looked like off spin, we can’t be sure though as the pitch was rarely used in the spell. Towards the end of the innings, D. Quatermaine was brought back on, getting a wicket with one of the worst balls of his spell, but deserved none the less. G. Davis was brought back on too, bowling very well and finding consistency. With a few overs to fill at the end of the innings going up the hill, J. Smoker was asked to come on, despite moaning about as much as he does about missing Ellie, Smoker reluctantly came on up the hill, bowling well to keep the opposition down to 196.
H. Cooper opened up with J. Chadwick Sr. Totham got off to a fast start, with Cooper smashing 50 before Chadwick got off the mark it seemed. To give other people a game H. Cooper decided to miss a straight one, bringing in J. Chadwick Jnr. Father and son at the crease, the run rate was still good, Chadwick Snr saying to his son it’s not time to make a change, just relax, take it easy. Chadwick Jnr decided to ignore this advice and went after the bowling, hitting only pull shots, despite Snr trying to explain how to bat to his son, he just turns away again, and it’s always been the same, same old story. Shortly after drinks, Chadwick Snr made his half century after sticking at it and batting well. Not to live in his father’s shadow, Chadwick Jnr got to 50 himself, finishing the game with a six and outscoring his dad.
A great win for the Sunday XI, despite not all getting a bat or bowl, everyone contributed in field. A good performance by all. Next week, the Sunday team are away to Witham!
