On a glorious Saturday afternoon the cricket season was finally upon us and despite a spongy outfield all seemed well at the bull meadow. An early breakthrough from GTCC opening quick Joe Smoker (2-61)set the tone and Totham hit the ground running but the boundary onslaught from Stock took the game away from Totham before the game had even started.
With a 150+ 2nd wicket Stock barely took their foot off the gas amassing a total of 327 with only reigning player of the year Ollie Cheeseman (1-51)and the vastly experienced Barry Mays (2-67)providing any type of control in the middle overs.
With the monster task ahead GTCC did not start well, losing skipper Harry Cooper early who surely would have been instrumental in chasing down a total that big. Once again Barry Mays provided stubborn resistance with the bat and was undefeated on 57 with Totham falling well short of the total and being bowled out for 166.
Not the start that the 1st XI were looking for but hopefully they will be able pick themselves up before visiting Writtle next week.
Many thanks to today’s match day sponsors Travis Perkins Witham.
